Choosing a size
How do you know which crane size the job needs?
The most common misunderstanding in crane hire is that a 25-tonne crane lifts 25 tonnes anywhere. The number on the machine is its maximum rating with the boom in its closest position. As the horizontal distance between the crane and the load grows — the working radius — the permitted load falls, sometimes to less than a quarter of the headline figure.
So a lift is defined by three numbers together: the weight, the horizontal distance from the crane centre to the set-down point, and the height. Three tonnes at five metres is easy work for a small crane; the same three tonnes at twenty-five metres over a warehouse wall can need a far bigger machine.
That is why we ask where the crane can stand before we ask what it weighs. If we can park close to the load, we can usually do the job with a smaller size and a lower price. A wall, a trench or an adjacent building that pushes the crane back raises the radius, and the size with it.
Several other things reduce the permitted load: boom angle, jib extension, the direction of slew, and wind when the load has a large face such as panels or signage. The operator reads all of this from the crane load chart rather than estimating it.

Site preparation
What the site needs before the crane arrives
Most delays on Jeddah sites are not caused by the crane, they are caused by where it has to stand. A mobile crane lowers outriggers that spread wider than the truck itself, and they have to sit on ground that will carry the pressure. Loose sand, fresh backfill or a manhole cover under a pad will all stop the job.
Overhead power lines are a safety matter, not a convenience one. A safe clearance has to hold between the boom and the lines through the whole lift and the whole slew, and sometimes the answer is to move the crane position entirely rather than manoeuvre underneath them.

How much does crane rental cost in Jeddah?
There is no single fixed rate, because the price moves with crane size, how long the work takes, how far into Jeddah the site is, and whether the lift is straightforward or needs preparation. Short jobs are usually charged hourly with a minimum; extended work is charged by the day. How much does a 25-tonne crane actually lift?

A mobile crane is built to lift: it parks, sets its outriggers, makes the lift, and leaves. A boom truck is a truck with a smaller lifting arm, so it can pick the load up, carry it on its own bed and deliver it in the same trip. Heavy lifting only points to a crane; medium loads that also need moving point to a boom truck and save you a second machine.
